Guide to Defeating Khann in Silksong

Guide to Defeating Khann in Silksong

We continue with the guides for the bosses you have to defeat to complete the “Old Hearts” quest in Act 3 of Hollow Knight: Silksong. Today’s boss is King of the Bark Khann , and as you can imagine, he’s a relatively challenging boss, but not overly so.

It reminded me a bit of Karmelita in that the boss gets faster and faster and acquires new attacks, leading to a fight that becomes increasingly frantic as it progresses, and in its final phase, the boss barely lets you breathe. However, I consider Karmelita to be considerably more difficult than this one.

Whether you’re having trouble with this boss or not, I’ll explain everything about Khann here: his location, a breakdown of his attacks, how to easily defeat him, the recommended build, and the reward you’ll get for doing so. Let’s get started!

Location: Karak Sands

Khann's location in Silksong

Finding Khann is very easy. Simply go to the location in Karak Sands indicated in the image above and enter the tower (there’s a huge door). Once there, proceed to a large statue and play the Elegy of the Depths in front of it . Remember to play the Needle while holding down the down arrow key.

If you don’t yet have the Elegy of the Depths, it’s because you need to progress further in Act 3. You receive it shortly after escaping the Abyss. By following the main questline in Act 3, you will eventually obtain it.

By the way, just so you know, there’s a secret boss in this area that’s exclusive to Act 3, in case you didn’t know.

Waves of Enemies Prior to Khann

Before your battle, you have to face many waves of enemies, although luckily these are quite easy.

This is important. After several waves of enemies and progressing, you’ll eventually reach the area I’ve indicated in the image above. There you’ll see a spike, and you must hit it several times to activate a shortcut that will allow you to skip all the previous waves of enemies if the boss defeats you (which would be very tedious). You don’t see the spike in the image because I’ve already activated the shortcut.

After this, you have to face another wave of enemies (you absolutely have to take this one if the boss defeats you) and after this use the Silk Flight to reach Khann’s room.

Khann’s Attack Guide

These are all his attacks:

  • Root Column : This is what he does constantly. He points his arm in a direction, and soon a huge column of roots will follow that direction. The “dust” on the screen indicates where the root will go, so avoid being where there is dust.
  • Roots in an “X” shape : It’s basically the same, but you’ll cross your arms and two columns of roots will appear, forming an “X”. Again, you have to use the dust that appears on the screen as a guide.

After a few hits, phase 2 begins.

Phase 2

Its attack speed increases noticeably. Beyond that, it will have a new attack where it summons spikes (smaller ones, not columns) scattered across the walls, floor, and ceiling of the screen. As is typical for this boss, the location of these spikes is indicated by dust on the screen, so you know what to expect.

Phase 3

Similar to the previous version, but now even faster and with these changes to its attacks:

  • Spikes on the Ceiling : Summons several spikes on the ceiling that fall after a short time. Position yourself in one of the gaps between the spikes to avoid damage when they fall.
  • Double X-Roots : An improved version of his X-Roots attack. After the first X, he creates another X with a slight change in its Y-position (vertical, you know). Don’t get complacent after dodging the first one, because another one will follow. He can still use his previous attack to confuse you; assume he’ll always use the improved version to avoid mistakes.

Strategy and Tips

I’m still using my Reaper build because it suits me so well: Magnetite Dice, Fractured Mask, Druid’s Eye, and Longclaw. Remember that by this point you can already have Hornet’s Needle maxed out; the final upgrade is here .

Regarding the battle against Khann, as long as you dodge his roots and attack him when you can (only when it’s safe), he’ll eventually fall. However, in phase 3 he’s so fast that it’s easy to start making more mistakes than you should. Activate your ultra-instinct mode and stay focused; don’t let a single mistake throw you off and lead to a chain of errors.

To heal, you have to wait until it performs one of its root attacks, get to safety, and heal as quickly as possible. You have plenty of time before the next attack (it’s a bit tight in phase 3, but it’s doable).

Finally, remember that the boss also deals contact damage. Avoid staying on top of him for too long (the Downward Air Strike, as always, is great, but hit him once and get away quickly) and also avoid staying underneath him when he jumps and hovers in the air (again, hit him once and get out of the way, as he won’t take long to fall).

Reward for Defeating Him

Defeating him grants you these 2 rewards:

  • Heart of Bark : One of the 3 hearts required for the mission “The Old Hearts”.
  • Achievement/Trophy “Tyrant” .
