We continue with the next boss that you should defeat in Ender Lilies , or at least it is the one that I recommend you do after defeating the Guardian Sigrid (you know what the Metroidvania genre has , that you can take different paths).
This is the Veteran Gerrald , a rather rough and sucky man who stands out for his somewhat slow but quite powerful blows. And be careful because here the difficulty increases a lot compared to the Guardian Sigrid, it has not seemed to me an extremely complicated boss, but the rush is noticeable; it is most likely that he will kill you sometimes even if you are a “pro” in the genre (which then everyone knows, but in general terms). It must also be said that he has enough life, the combat will be somewhat long.
The case, that as always, we are going to see everything about this and my advice so that defeating him is more bearable. Let’s go there!
BOSS LOCATION IN ENDER LILIES
You will find Veteran Gerrald next to the checkpoint called ” Source to the Bridge “, specifically in the room that is just to the right from the checkpoint. Here is the exact location on the map:
HOW TO DEFEAT VETERAN GERRALD
As I have already mentioned, he is a warrior who stands out for giving good blows, so we will have to be careful… that after all, he has a Garrote bigger than us and that makes a mess.
The fight consists of 3 phases:
PHASE 1: RELAX MODE
It will start quite “calm”, these will be its attacks for now:
- Normal Hit : He will make the typical flash and then he will hit forward (keep in mind that due to the size of his weapon he has quite a range), but be careful because sometimes he does a combo and hits 2 times in a row (slowly, yes). The best thing you can do is the usual, dash and you get behind, if he makes the second hit then another dash and you keep hitting.
- Jumping Strike : Gerrald will make a huge jump upwards and land hitting with the weapon. Get as far away as you can when he does it because when he falls he will also create a small shock wave. His thing is that, you move away so he doesn’t fall on your face and when he falls you jump to prevent damage from the blast wave (which doesn’t have a huge range, but just in case do it).
As soon as you lower more or less 25% of the life you will see that it will create a kind of red shock wave. When will phase 2 begin?
PHASE 2: LIGHT RAGE
In this phase it will have the attacks of the previous phase, but a new one will be added:
- Ground Slam: He will hit the ground with his hammer, creating an expansive wave and the typical lightning bolts that will travel across the ground in both directions. As soon as he does, get away from him and jump so you don’t get hit by the lightning. If you calculate the dash well you will be able to dodge everything without the need to jump.
When you lower another 25% of his life (he will have a remaining 50% left) he will enter his most complicated phase, phase 3. Again he will make a red shock wave, it is the way to easily see that he has changed phase.
PHASE 3: SUPREME RAGE
Here Veteran Gerrald will go a little crazy, this is when you will have to be more careful and you better put your skills to good use. He will keep all his attacks, the only thing is that he will attack almost constantly and many times doing combos with several of his attacks, it will be much more difficult to find an opening because you will have to dodge almost all the time.
As soon as you see a small opening you know, hit it as much as you can, throw some powerful ability to do more damage, back up and dodge again until you find another gap.
In addition to this you will have a new attack:
- Charge : The typical charge attack. If he catches you from the front, dash as soon as he does, if he catches you further away, dash as soon as he crosses you.
With a little patience it will fall, cheers.
BUILD AND BATTLE TIPS
This is the build that I recommend and with which I defeated him:
- Skills:
- Guardian Sigrid : Use it when you melee her to add extra damage, it’s especially useful in her phase 3, so don’t spend all of it at first, save some for phase 3.
- Merchant of the West : It is a crow that will throw balls (like Grimm’s boy from Hollow Knight), it comes in handy to cause damage passively. Remember that you invoke him and he will fly around you automatically throwing balls.
- Relics :
- Broken Music Box : Slightly reduces the damage we receive, something that is greatly appreciated in such a long fight; more with the mamporros that Gerrald puts.
- Manissa’s Ring : You will be able to use the skills more times.
This is what I used, you may not have all the items (although you should if you’ve explored enough); If you are missing one, replace it with something else.
Another strategy could be the Headless Knight Ability (which we get shortly before reaching Gerrald), which is basically for parrying. I tried it and the build that I left you above worked better for me because the parry in this game is a bit difficult to master since when you press the button there is a certain delay until the parry is activated and it is a bummer.
REWARDS FOR DEFEATING HIM
This is what we will get by defeating Veteran Gerrald in Ender Lilies:
- Ability: Veteran Gerrald . An infinite use skill just like the Black Knight’s, only in Gerrald’s case we will only hit a fairly slow but very powerful blow.
- Action: Giant’s Hammer . An action that we can use whether or not we have Gerrald equipped. If when jumping we press down and hit, we will dive to the ground. This will allow us to break that red soil that you will have found in various places. This type of floor will sometimes require you to jump from a great height in order to break it.
