Hay is a very valuable resource in Stardew Valley since it is necessary to feed our farm animals in the game, which will allow them to produce their products so we can sell them or create even more profitable artisan products.
Obtaining this resource in industrial quantities is extremely simple, what happens is that the game does not explain to us at any time how we can do it and therefore it is quite common for new Stardew Valley players not to know the best method to obtain Hay. By proxy, you can buy it from Marnie, but you better keep reading because the method we will explain will allow you to get a lot of Hay and for free.
Keep in mind that animals can also eat the Grass on your farm (the tall grass like the one in the photo, not the weeds) if you open the door to their stable/pen for them, but even with those it is important that you get a large amount of Hay in case they run out of grass to eat or so that you can feed them in winter, when all the grass will wither there. Anyway, we will also explain how to plant the Herb and so on.
Let’s go with the step by step guide in detail!
YOU NEED A SILO
The first step will be to get a Silo , the Silo is a building that will allow us to store Hay and it is essential to have it since without it we will not be able to create Hay . This will also allow us to store a lot of units of Hay (240 for each one you have), which will be essential because with the method that we will explain to you you will get it in industrial quantities.
To build your Silo, you will have to talk to Robin (the town’s architect, she is in the building above the Civic Center) and see the different construction options she has, one of them will be the Silo. You will see that to build it you will need the following materials:
- 100 Coins.
- 100x Stone : You get them by crushing the stones.
- 10x Clay : We link you to a post in which we explain the best method to get it.
- 5x Copper Ingot : You can obtain copper ores in the Mine, the Ingot is obtained by adding 5x Copper Ore and Coal in a Furnace.
As you can see, it does not require many materials, it is a fairly simple construction. The only thing that may cost a little to obtain is Clay, especially when you do not know the best method to obtain this resource (easy to obtain, but again the game does not explain how to do it), but if you access the link that we have added above you will have no problem getting it.
As soon as you have all the materials, take them to Robin and accept the construction, she will start building it (it will take a couple of days). Add the building in a secluded place where it won’t be too much of a problem, don’t worry if at some point you want to move it since (once built) you can do so if you talk to Robin without any cost.
CREATING HAY
Now that you have the Silo, getting a lot of Hay will be very easy. You will simply have to go to the tall grass and use your Scythe on it . You will see that when you do this, a Hay icon will appear near your character to let you know that you have created the Hay.
The Hay will not go to your inventory, it will automatically go to the Silo, if you interact with it you will be able to see how many units of Hay you have stored at that moment.
The ideal would be that you have not cut the tall Grass on your farm, since at the beginning you will always have this type of grass and it expands, so if you do not cut it, between building the Silo you will be able to get a lot of Hay by cutting it. Anyway, if you cut it and run out, don’t worry, we explain what you can do about it.
HOW TO PLANT GRASS
To plant the Tall Grass that we mentioned, you will have to go to Pierre’s store and buy the Grass Patch from him (it costs 100 coins). After this you simply have to place it on the floor of your farm (better in a clear place with space). To make the process a little lighter, we recommend that you plant several Grass Patches (spaced apart).
After this it is a matter of waiting, the Grass will expand over time. The most difficult thing is to get the first large section of Grass, but once you have it, it will be enough to never cut all the Grass at once (cut a little and that’s it) since you want it to continue growing and expanding and having to be Planting it again is quite lazy. By doing this you will have a constant source of Hay for free.
If you are worried that the Grass may expand too much (if you get lost you will have a huge field), you can add some walls to prevent it from expanding too much and thus have it a little more controlled.
HOW TO COLLECT HAY
Now that you have a lot of Hay, you just need to know how you can collect it to give to your animals. Well you see, it is very simple, you will simply have to interact with a Hay Hopper that you will always have available in your Pens and Stables (we have marked it in the photo).
By doing so you will take out the same amount of Hay that you need to fill all the Hay slots (where my character is) in your Pen/Stable; as long as you have units available in the Silo, of course.
