Each generation has some Pokémon that are more designed for story, anime, or merchandising than Competitive Pokémon . And that is what Bellibolt , the companion Pokémon of the electric gym leader E-Nigma, may look like to many. But what if we told you that Bellibolt could be viable for your teams?
This cute Pokémon hides more than one Ace in its… well, it doesn’t have sleeves, but it can surprise you. Let’s see everything that Bellibolt can offer us.
? BELLIBOLT STATS
His stats add up to a total of 495 points , right on the edge of those 500 that we usually recommend for Competitive:
- Health: 109.
- Attack: 64.
- Defense: 91.
- Special Attack: 103.
- Special Defense: 83.
- Speed: 45.
Although it seems that his stats are not very high, his cast is very efficient. With 109 Health, and his Defense and Special Defense at 91 and 83 respectively, Bellibolt is able to take almost any hit, which will be key to his ability.
Offensively it is also a Pokémon with great potential. 103 Special Attack is a great base and at 45 it’s a very slow Pokémon, something we can use if we Trick Room .
TYPE, RESISTANCES AND WEAKNESSES
Bellibolt is an Electric-Type , just like Regieleki or Tapu Koko , which gives it the following weaknesses and resistances:
- It is resistant to Electric, Flying and Steel.
- It is weak to Earth.
With 3 resistances and only one weakness, the Electric type is a great defensive type and will help us deal with many opponents. Let’s see the most dangerous of that one weakness:
- Ground : Very common type in Competitive, it has very dangerous Pokémon. Garchomp, Longfang, and Gastrodon are good examples.
BELLIBOLT’S ABILITIES
Let’s now see their abilities and which ones could be interesting:
DYNAMO
When the Pokémon takes damage it charges up, empowering its next Electric-type move by 50% . It is a tremendous ability, since being a Pokémon with great Health it will be able to take hits with some ease and respond with a lot of damage. It is our best skill.
STATIC ELECTRICITY
Any Pokémon that hits a Pokémon with Static Electricity with a Contact Move has a 30% chance to be Paralyzed. It’s not a bad skill, but Dynamo is far superior. Also, if we paralyze a Pokémon, its Speed is reduced by half, which in Trick Room can be bad.
MOISTURE (HIDDEN ABILITY)
This ability prevents moves like Self Destruct or Explosion from being used. It is a very weak ability for competitive, since these moves are not used. Does not prevent Annihilape ‘s Sacrifice .
IVS, EVS AND NATURE
The perfect Iv’s and in EV’s we will enhance their Special Attack and Health:
- EV’s : We will use 252 in Health, 252 in Special Attack and 4 in Special Defense.
- Nature : We will carry Modest Nature (+Special Attack, -Attack) or Tame (+Special Attack, -Speed) for use in Trick Room.
RECOMMENDED ITEM
These are the objects that we recommend for Bellibolt:
- Leftovers : The Pokémon recovers 1/16 of its total Health points at the end of the turn. Thanks to its high Health, this item can help us endure many turns, boosting our stall to the maximum.
- Assault Vest : Increases the Pokémon’s Special Defense by 50%, but we will not be able to use status movements. Since Special Defense is his worst defensive stat, this item is fantastic.
- Jagged Helmet : The opposing Pokémon will lose 1/6 of its health when making a contact attack. Interesting to break Banda Focus and do some damage on forced switches.
- Insurance Weakness : It will increase our Attack and Special Attack after receiving very effective damage. It will give us a great combo in Doubles.
BEST MOVES FOR BELLIBOLT
These are the movements that we recommend for the electric Pokémon:
- Parabola Charge : STAB Electric, Special, 65 power and 100 precision. Heals Bellibolt for 50% of the damage dealt to the target. It will be very effective damage against Water and Flying, so it will be very useful against Pokemon like Palafin or Togekiss .
- Muddy Water : Water, Special, 90 power and 85 precision. It has a 30% chance to lower the opponent’s accuracy by one level and in Doubles it will hit both opponents. It is very effective damage to Fire, Rock and Ground type Pokémon. Fantastic for Pokémon like Longfang , Garganacl or Armarouge (but be careful, as it has little precision it can miss us).
- Relax : Normal, Status and 100% Accuracy. We recover half of our maximum Health. It’s our way of getting Health back and staying on the field, which has great synergy with the Dynamo ability.
- Voltchange : Electric STAB, 70 power and 100%. After hitting, return the Pokémon to the Poké Ball. With this movement we can damage the opponent before switching to our Bellibolt and with Dinamo it will hit very hard if they hit us before (which will almost always be a slow Pokémon).
- Cold Water : Water, Special, 50 power and 100% accuracy. This move reduces the target’s Attack by one stage, making it very good against physical attackers.
- Big Voice : Normal, Special, 90 power and 100% accuracy. Hit both opponents. A great option in Doubles and against enemies that can withstand Electric and Water damage, such as Dragons. It’s our best option against Pokemon like Thundermoon . Remember that Ghost-types, such as Fluttermane or Gengar , will be immune to Loudmouth.
- Protection : Normal, Status, and 100% Accuracy (but can fail if used consecutively). Prevents all damage or status moves to the Pokémon using it.
BELLIBOLT STRATEGIES
This little electric frog is capable of taking punches like a boxer and returning a tremendous hook to do the KO. Let’s see how you can prepare your Bellibolt:
BELLIBOLT OFF WALL – THE OHKO DEFIBRILLATOR (SINGLES)
- IVs: Perfect.
- EVs: 252 Health, 252 Special Attack, 4 Special Defense.
- Nature: Modest.
- Item: Wreckage / Jagged Helmet / Assault Vest.
- Skill: Dynamo.
- Movements:
- Parabola Charge.
- Muddy Water.
- Voltchange.
- Relaxation / Cold Water.
This set is tremendous, acting like a wall absorbing Pokémon , but returning a tremendous amount of damage. Parabola Charge will be our best move to deal damage , recovering a large amount of Health each turn. In our tests Cold Water has been more useful, since lowering the opponent’s Attack lengthens the confrontations even more and gives Dynamo more value each turn.
The choice of object is quite free; Remnants is the most solid, but if we have it on another Pokémon, Jagged Helmet is fantastic for breaking Focus Band on the opponent and weakening them in the same turn. And if you opt for the Assault Vest, remember not to wear Relaxation.
BELLIBOLT SAFE WEAKNESS + TRICK ROOM (VGC DOUBLES)
- IVs: Perfect, less Speed that we will leave at 0 to be as slow as possible.
- EVs: 252 Health, 252 Special Attack, 4 Special Defense.
- Nature: Mansa.
- Object: Insurance Weakness.
- Skill: Dynamo.
- Movements:
- Parabola Charge.
- Volt Change.
- Muddy Water / Loud Voice.
- Relax / Protection.
This set is tremendous for turning Bellibolt into a destroyer, into a full sweeper . The objective is simple, place Trick Room and activate our Weakness Insurance and Dynamo with our partner so that Parabola Charge destroys the opponent. We give you the idea of using a Pokémon like Slowking , it is slower than Bellibolt, it learns Trick Room and Earthquake (Ground-type move that lowers Speed and will activate Weakness Insurance if we hit our Bellibolt, in addition to making it even more « fast” in Trick Space).
Choosing between Muddy Water and Loudmouth is for coverage, though running Slowking Loudmouth can be more useful. And Chill can be decisive against Pokemon like Toxapex or Garganacl with their turn-based damage, but Protection is safer.
BELLIBOLT TERACRYSTALLIZATION
- Teratype Water
This is our go-to for defensive teracrystallization. The unitary Water type is very powerful and we will gain STAB damage in Muddy Water or Cold Water, hitting our only weakness very hard; the Earth type. Remember that Water’s weaknesses are Electric and Grass.
- Electric Teratype
The Electric teratype is the best option to boost its offensive capacity, especially in the Trick Room set. If we have the Dynamo ability active, being charged, the damage of our Electric moves will be STAB x2, +2 for Weakness Insurance and 50% more power, doing massive damage. Try it, the damage will surprise you.
HOW TO DEFEAT BELLIBOLT AND COUNTERS
Bellibolt requires a bit of setup (especially on the Trick Room set) or hitting him to really be a threat, so there are a few ways we can minimize his impact:
- A Tough Ground-Type : Pokemon like Garchomp or Longfang are able to take his damage, with their immunity to Electric-types and good defensive stats for Water-type damage. They will also be able to do a lot of damage to Bellibolt.
- Scream : Lowering Bellibolt’s Special Attack will greatly reduce his damage, forcing him to come out of the field even though he can take the hits. Krookodile , Umbreon , and Arcanine are some of the best Pokémon to use Scream.
