SHOULD I KILL THE OWLBEAR IN BALDUR'S GATE 3?

SHOULD I KILL THE OWLBEAR IN BALDUR’S GATE 3?

In Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3  we will meet an Owlbear with its baby and it will of course be somewhat aggressive in front of us since ultimately it fears that we may cause harm to its baby.

As soon as we get close, the typical dialogue will appear in which we can try to calm this cool creature, try to get away or attack it. All actions other than attacking require a dice roll and if we fail we will inevitably enter combat.

In advance I clarify that leaving morality aside, the most beneficial thing is to kill the Owlbear. I know it sounds a bit cruel, but hey, now I will tell you in more detail in this guide and I will give you some information that I think can help you a lot in making a decision. Let’s go there!

OWLBEAR NEST LOCATION

You will find the Owlbear Nest at coordinates x:96 y:439 . It is not difficult at all to find this area since you simply have to go to the “Emerald Grove Environments” teleport (the one south of the Emerald Grove) and from there go west.

DO I KILL HIM OR LET HIM LIVE?

You decide, but I am going to give you a piece of information that you may not know and that I think can help you a lot in making a decision.

You see, regardless of whether you kill him or not… shortly after said event he will die anyway ; This is because some goblins will carry it. Come on, that’s the fate of poor Owlbear and you can’t do much about it.

The only difference therefore is that if you kill him, you will at least get a few rewards. You can get some of them through stealth or running a lot, but it won’t be easy because the Owlbear is very attentive to its nest.

HOW TO DEFEAT THE OWLBEAR

It’s not a very complicated fight as long as you take a good strategy (like in almost all fights, wow). What is certain is that this creature has quite high mobility (it makes tremendous jumps) and also causes considerable melee damage.

Strategy to Defeat the Owl Bear

The strategy that I recommend (I put it into practice and it worked wonderfully) is that you place your most “tank” character in the area below so that he attracts the attention of this creature and endures its damage while your other characters deal with it. They cause damage from a distance at the top with greater safety (the funny thing is that you put the tank in its place where they can reach the Owlbear, of course). For greater security, you should have a Healer such as Shadowheart so that he can heal your tank.

In my case I left my main character at the bottom fighting the Owlbear hand-to-hand while I had the other characters at the top:

  • Gale casting spells from a distance.
  • Astarion attacking from a distance with sneak attacks (you know, the ones you can use when you have the advantage, you will have it because you are in a high area).
  • Shadowheart: Healing the tank and casting a ranged spell.

I did it with my characters at level 3 and it barely took 2 turns to finish him off, the key is to do a lot of damage in a short time because if you extend the battle it is likely that things will go wrong given the high damage that this creature has. Furthermore, after passing “x” turns he will enter a kind of furious state and there he will begin to deal even higher damage, enough to make it highly likely that your most resistant character will end up lying on the ground (and not sleeping), So what has been said, you are interested in seeing it fall quickly.

REWARDS FOR DEFEATING HIM

This is all we can get by eliminating the Owl Bear:

  • Tip of a Broken Spear : You have to combine it with “Shaft of a Broken Lance” to obtain a weapon that is quite good for the beginning of the adventure, I will explain it better later in another post.
  • Owlbear Egg : Collect it from the nest, without further ado. It’s equivalent to 40 Camp Supplies, but come on, don’t even think about eating it.
  • Embrace of Father Oak : You will have to loot the “Headless Skeleton” next to the Owlbear Egg. This is a medium armor with 13 Armor Class that will damage dealing 1-6 Radiant Damage to undead or beasts that hit the wearer. It’s not very good armor, but anyway, you’ll either sell it or “feed” it to Gale.
