Diseases are one of the different debuffs that our Darkest Dungeon characters can acquire for different reasons (now we explain it better below) and they are generally disadvantages that we will have to eliminate through a treatment of some kind (we will also talk about this).
It must be said that there is some loose disease that even has its point since despite providing us with stat reductions, they also provide us with some positive ones (although it is not normal). A clear example of this would be the “Rage” Disease as it gives us a juicy +15% Damage and -10 Accuracy (which I wouldn’t recommend anyway because Accuracy is very important in this game). But what has been said, in 99% of cases, we will want to eliminate them without a doubt.
We will not see the list of Diseases since there are many and well, you will find them, without further ado. Instead I will explain what things can cause diseases in Darkest Dungeon so that you can prevent them and how you can manage them (treat them, come on). Let’s go there!
HOW ARE DISEASES ACQUIRED?
Diseases can be acquired in different ways, broadly speaking they are these:
- Enemy Attacks : Many enemies, especially in areas like the Forest or Labyrinth , have a chance to apply a Disease to the character that receives the attack. Whether or not your character acquires this disease will depend on his Disease Resistance (the % that the character has in his statistics), so if you want to avoid them it would be good to resort to increasing said resistance; but the truth is that since it is relatively easy to deal with them (we will see below), well, I would spend a bit and focus on improving other statistics such as Damage, Critical or Evasion (generally) since they will give us much more (think that in In a way, if the enemies last you less, they will also have less chance to apply Diseases to you).
- Curios : Some Curios have interactions that can apply a specific Disease or a random one (there are quite a few in fact). As I already did the guide on the Curios, I leave you the link here , I explain all their interactions, so you will also see which of them can make the characters sick to avoid said interactions at all costs.
- By Relieving Stress in the Fief : Certain places to relieve stress have a small chance of making a character sick for free. A clear example would be the Brothel, since our character could acquire Syphilis (-5 Accuracy, -10% Damage and -10% Health).
- By the Face : Sometimes it seems that at the end of the expedition sometimes a character gets sick a little by the face, has it happened to someone else to confirm?
HOW TO CURE OR TREAT DISEASES
And now what surely interests you really, the way to cure or treat them, which is what is really interesting in order to manage them because you want to or not you are going to eat some disease while playing . We mainly have two methods to remove them (each with its peculiarities):
- The Sanatorium : The Sanatorium is a place destined to the treatment of Illnesses and also of Traits . In the case of Diseases we will have to put our sick character in the area below (his thing is to improve this building so that we can put more characters in simultaneously and that treatment also costs us less Gold, as well as increasing the chance to remove more than one disease from the character at once) and treat him. It is not the best option because it costs us Gold, but it is the safest way since for obvious reasons it is better to go on an expedition with healed characters and the next method that we will talk about will not always be available.
- The Plague Doctor or the Grave Robber : Both characters have a very interesting Camping Ability since it will allow us to cure Diseases to our characters. This implies, of course, that we can only do it during medium or long expeditions (only in these you can camp) and that we will have to have these characters with the relevant ability. The good? It’s free, so take advantage of it whenever you can (the only cost would be the time points we spend with Camping Skills). I still don’t recommend taking these characters into areas where they are not highly recommended for this reason alone.
In addition to this, comment in passing that sometimes an event can be triggered in the Freehold that will allow us to use the Sanatorium rooms for free, so in that case it would be free for us to treat the Diseases of our characters (this also affects Traits, even with a view to fixing the positive ones, which is something quite expensive and goes a long way when they give us the opportunity for free).
