Things to think about before buying a gaming TV

As gaming in general and has become increasingly popular , the TVs have also been given more functions that make them more fun and better adapted to play on .

It can be difficult to keep up with what all the abbreviations and different names mean. In general, you should be prepared to pay a little more for a good gaming TV than what the cheapest TV models cost. A cheap TV set is not made to play on as they rarely have a sufficiently compliant and fast picture.

A game TV should of course have a good and compliant picture, but there are also several other important features that you should look for in order for the TV to be adapted for gaming and we will go through the most important parts in the buying guide below, before we dive down. in our best in test.

Variable Refresh Rate (VRR)

VRR is a function that in real time matches a TV’s refresh rate with the frame rate that the console or computer sends to the TV. It provides a softer and faster gaming experience and reduces the risk of screen tearing as shown below. The consoles that support VRR today are PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S, One X and One S. However, PS4 or Nintendo consoles do not support VRR.

Image showing an example of screen tearing, something you want to avoid when playing video games and computer games. With VRR, the risk of this decreases.

Game mode

A good gaming TV should today offer some form of Game mode, a function in the TV that makes it optimized for video games . With Game mode, you turn off certain visual functions, to reduce the response time and increase the speed of the TV when playing.

In other words, it is a very useful feature when playing various multiplayer games , to get the best possible starting position against your opponents.

However, such a function is not as necessary in a grand and nice single-player game where the visual with beautiful environments and nice effects should be at the center.

Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM)

ALLM means that the TV automatically changes to Game mode when it detects a signal from a game console or PC, of course Game mode is also turned off when not playing. A very flexible function to avoid having to activate and deactivate the game mode yourself.

Resolution

The resolution of a TV screen is  how many pixels it has in width and height . The higher the number, the sharper and clearer the image , when everything else is equal.

Today, it is absolutely most common for TVs to have 4K / UHD resolution , which even today’s consoles from PlayStation and Xbox also support. TV models with 8K resolution , an even sharper image, have also started to appear. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X have support for sending 8K, however, there are currently no games that support 8K and it will probably take a while before it arrives. It is of course possible to play in 4K on an 8K TV as well.

Update frequency

Another important factor for a good gaming TV is the refresh rate, which is measured in Hertz (Hz) . A higher refresh rate means that more frames per second (FPS) can be displayed, which means more compliant and smoother screen movements. This is a great advantage in fast games such as various car games, sports games and shooting games.

A good TV for gaming should today be able to deliver 4K in 120Hz , this because the consoles PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S, One X and One S have support for sending video in 4K @ 120Hz. This means that you can play games up to 120 FPS on these consoles with the right TV.

Panel type

There are several different techniques today for creating the actual image in the TV. We briefly go through these below and what their benefits are:

  • LED – A technology that has been around for many years in the consumer market, the image is created using LEDs that sit on the edges or all over the back. Affordable technology that allows it to be offered large, thin and cheap TVs. Has problems reproducing completely carbon black parts, also called bleeding.
  • QLED – Further development of LEDs developed by Samsung, but which have also started to be used by other manufacturers. Offers better colors, blacks and viewing angles than regular LEDs do.
  • Mini-LED / Neo QLED – A technology where the LEDs are approx. 40 times smaller, which gives more lamps in the TV and better control over light and darkness. Mini-LED can be combined with QLED to offer an even better image and is then called Neo QLED.
  • OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) – A technology mainly by LG, but Sony also has TVs with OLED. Each LED can be turned off individually, which means that there are few carbon black parts in the image when needed. The technology also means that the TVs can be super thin.

OLED works best in darker rooms as the individual diodes can go out and create the right blackness. If the TV is to be in a room where a lot of daylight enters, we recommend looking at a gaming TV with LED / QLED / Neo QLED.

Input lag

Input law is the time it takes from pressing a button to it being registered and displayed on the screen . In a good TV for gaming want as low input lag as possible and a good figure is below 40 ms, while input lag below 20 ms is really good.

Adaptive Sync technology: G-Sync & FreeSync

If the game TV is to be connected to a PC, you should look for TV models with the Adaptive Sync technologies NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync. These are to counteract screen tearing and notches in the image , which can occur if the graphics card in the computer produces more frames than the screen can display.

With G-Sync and FreeSync, the screen syncs its refresh rate with the graphics card’s frame rate, which means that they work at the same speed .

NVIDIA G-Sync helps sync a computer's graphics card with the image refresh rate of a monitor such as a TV or computer screen.
AMD FreeSync is a technology that syncs the frame rate of the graphics card with the image refresh rate of a monitor.

Screen size

In principle, all TV models are available in several different sizes , a larger screen is more expensive all other things being equal, but also provides a more immersive gaming experience.

The size of a gaming TV today starts from about 43 inches , if you want something smaller than that, you should instead look at a  gaming screen . After 43 inches In between there are lots of sizes such as. 48, 50, 55, 65, 75 and up to 86-90 inches .

With that said, we take and dive into our best in test!
